The Food Exploration Project
The Food Exploration Project is a twelve-lesson program that helps children build essential food literacy and cooking skills through hands-on activities, simple recipes, and thoughtful discussions.
Children explore taste and sensory discovery, learn about local and seasonal foods, and investigate how bread is made. They develop nutrition knowledge by examining added sugars, reading food labels, and comparing healthy and less healthy snacks. Students also learn how advertising influences food choices, practice kitchen and knife safety, and discover edible plant parts through cooking. As the program progresses, children prepare dishes such as smoothies, stir-fries, and Three Sisters tacos, experiment with customizing their own recipes, and reflect on family meals and cultural traditions. Together, these lessons strengthen practical skills, encourage curiosity, and help children make informed, confident food choices.
