Beginning Explorers
PreK-1st Grade

Beginning Explorers introduces young children to food discovery through simple tastings, hands-on activities, and story-based lessons. Beginning Explorers includes two curricula, the Fruit Explorers Challenge and Food Sources, Safety + Storybooks, which build early curiosity and confidence around healthy foods while supporting foundational learning skills. Educators receive the full printed curriculum along with a Food Explorers Kit, which includes all essential non-disposable materials needed to teach the program.​

Curriculum 1

Fruit Exploration Challenge

Worksheet-based activities focused on tasting and learning about 36 different fruits.

​

  • Worksheets guide children to practice writing, identify the size of shapes, draw the inside and outside of fruits, and record observations while exploring them.

  • Adaptable to fruits that are seasonally and locally available and used in any order, with a blank worksheet included for fruits not included in the series.

Food Sources, Safety + Storybooks

Ten lessons focused on food sources and food safety through storybooks centered on farming, plant parts, finding culinary courage to try new things, and appreciation for a wide variety of foods.​​​

​

  • Lessons include dissecting fruits to identify seeds, making butter in a jar, and watching celery ‘drink’ food-dyed water to learn about parts of a plant.

  • Minimal ingredients are needed for lessons with a focus on tasting rather than creating full recipes.
